I was surprised the other day when I was browsing around Crate and Barrel and I saw the Shift Console still available.
Why, you ask? Because I bought it about 4 years ago when I was a single gal living alone. The price was right and I needed somewhere to put my TV, but I also wanted something flexible since I was renting a little one bedroom apartment and I had no idea where I would be living down the road.
Our current living room is really long and narrow, and the shift console is long an narrow (you can probably figure out where I’m going with this), so long and narrow console + long and narrow living room = perfect furniture solution. We still use it as a TV console, just like back in my apartment days, but at the time I bought it I figured it could also be used as a bookcase, a dining room sideboard, an office credenza, and I’m sure many other ways if it didn’t continue to work as a TV stand.

It is a fun piece to decorate because there are so many ways it can be done. I like that the geometric shelving gives it a little contemporary flare. I created extra storage to hide our DVDs and other random stuff with baskets from World Market.
I hunted and hunted for baskets that were wide enough to not be dwarfed by the openings, but I didn’t want to spend an arm and a leg either, and these were a pretty good fit and a good price. I looked at the World Market website, and it doesn’t appear they have these anymore online, but I saw them still available in the store by me the other day if you are looking for something similar. They are the Madras baskets.

I change around the other accessories frequently. The lantern is from Homegoods and the glass candle holders are from Pottery Barn Outlet.

I bought this bowl awhile back from Z Gallerie.

Pretty good fit in the room, eh?

What a beautiful room! I love the coffee table and accessories!
The piece that you picked could have looked very hard and cold but I love what you did with accessories to make it look beautiful. Modern pieces are tricky like that but you did a very good job. I love the use of the baskets.
Girls…..you can’t find the correct width of baskets..here is an idea….
Take a plastic or heavy cardboard box…cover with a natural fiber place
mat. They are readily found at garage and resale shops. Don’t forget Target ,Walmart, and K Mart have have this style of baskets also.
