Small Exterior Changes with Lanterns, Big Impact

It’s amazing what  a few small changes can do to impact the look of our home.

We replaced our front porch lights and back patio lights, and I can’t help but smile every time I walk by and see them.

New Patio Porch Light Flagstone Steps

Our mums are taking center stage in this picture, but I just love them. They are the ones that Marty’s mom gave us last year. I dug them up this past spring and stuck them in pots and kept them in a sunny spot on our back patio until they were in full bloom, then switched  places with the potted vincas that we moved to the patio (that will probably sadly die soon).

New Porch Light with Potted Mums

You see, the reason the new lights make me smile so much is our previous lights were uglier than ugly. The shape of the old porch light wasn’t bad, but it had dirty faded plastic and chipping spray paint. Not the most welcoming light (or sight) for visitors. In fact, it was so ugly, we tried to donate it to Habitat ReStore and they rejected it (we assume it was because of that, though they simply just left it behind after their pickup of some of our old kitchen cabinets). I kind of felt sorry for the rejected light.

Old Light

The new front porch light turns on automatically at dusk at 50% brightness, which I love. You can set it to turn off after 3 or 6 hours or run all night until dawn. It has a motion sensor, so if you walk in front of it, it goes to 100% brightness for 1 minute. We hardly ever turned our porch light on before because we always forgot to turn it back off at bedtime, so the auto on feature is so nice to have.

New Pretty Lantern Light

It goes nicely with our new front door  too. You can see one of our old lights still outside of our garage in this picture. We had some rain and lack of time to replace it, but this weekend it will be coming down and will be replaced with one just like our new one by the front door.

The back patio light was your standard basic light, but it was broken. This guy went straight to the trash.

Old Light:

The new patio light looks much nicer and was only about $30 from Lowe’s. We still grill out at night sometimes even though it is starting to get darker earlier, so it is especially nice not to juggle flashlights with a flaming grill anymore.

New pretty lantern light:

So much better than before.

Patio Door Color Ideas

I’ve shown off our patio before and after, new patio table, and updated patio landscaping, but I try to strategically avoid taking close ups of the doors that lead to the mudroom and garage. You see, they are ugly. One is old faded colonial blue and the other is primed white with a yellowing vinyl trim. I guess the previous owners installed a new door but never painted it. So not only are they ugly, they don’t even match.

They are in desperate need of painting, so I did a few color mock ups. I know the actual colors will probably look different, and we’ll still get samples and all that jazz, so this is just to see what color family we’d like to have.

My first thought was to go with a cheery, but somewhat neutral, green. This is Sherwin Williams Relentless Olive. I hadn’t really thought about this until I saw the mock up, but I really like that the green ties into the plants around the patio. I think it looks colorful but cohesive.

Then I remembered from my Virtual Paint Makeover that I had done Carol-Lynn’s door in a deep plum which I thought looked really nice. This is Sherwin Williams Plum Brown. I like how it brings out some of the colors in the slate patio, but I’m not sure how I feel about it for our house.

I am always drawn to dark blue doors. This is Sherwin Williams Dark Night. I love the deep color and this particular shade. It looks like it has just a drop of green it it so it isn’t just a plain navy. Our front door, trim, and shutters in the front of the house are blue, so I’m not sure if I want more blue, but this is a pretty color.

What do you think? Any favorites? Oh and if you’re wondering about our Ikea Kitchen renovation, we’re still slowly plugging away at it. I’ll post soon about our progress!

Patio Landscaping

Last weekend we took a little break from our Ikea kitchen reno and did some gardening (which means our living room looks like a cabinet factory right now).

It was drizzly and rainy most of the weekend, which sounds like a bad time, but might actually be my new favorite time to do yard work. For one thing, the sun wasn’t out so it was cooler, and the other reason is the ground is so much softer which makes digging holes easier. Plus no need to water the plants right away.

We did a little in the front of the house too, but more on that later.

We are very novice gardeners and are learning as we go, and boy have we learned since our entire yard needed a complete overhaul (see the entire back yard and patio process here). We ask lots of questions when we go to nurseries, and one by us will even help you with your landscape design for free. Yeah, can’t beat that.

We have been mostly happy with the plants we have chosen, but a couple weeks ago we decided that the Shenandoah Grass over on one side of the patio wasn’t working for us.

You might remember this is what it looked like before with the Shenandoah Grass.

And this is what it looked like way before (yeah, I know, ick)

And this is now.

The little flagstone step flanked by the Shenandoah Grass was okay looking, but it provided no privacy and died off in the winter. We decided to replace it with 3 Schip Laurels. The Laurels should grow large enough in a couple years to provide a bit more privacy and are evergreen.

We are still loving our new table. One thing we realized after sitting at the table is that it is actually a couple inches higher than our old table. I guess there’s no standard patio table height…who knew? We do feel kind of short when eating, but we’ve gotten used to it.

Remember our mums that we got last year? We transplanted them to the red pots over by the laurels and they seem to be doing well. That area gets a good amount of sun which is why we put them over there. They will eventually move to our front porch when (or I should say, if) they they bloom this fall. We are novices, after all :)

Our hydrangeas are getting ready to bloom. You can just make out the bud there in the center of the leaves.

I am hoping they get nice big blue blooms, but since we only planted them last year we’re not really sure how well they will perform this year. Hydrangeas in our area sometimes have a harder time in the first couple years.

The Encore Azaleas I showed you last week just finished blooming, but should bloom twice more this year. You can just make out the last of the flowers. All the rain and storms we had over the weekend knocked off most the flowers. They lasted a good two weeks and we enjoyed every minute of them.

Also, I was recently featured on Decorchick and The CSI Project. Go check it out!

New Patio Table

Remember the unfortunate incident a couple weeks ago with our patio table?

We looked at various options such as having a piece of glass custom cut to replace the old glass, buying from someone off Craigslist, and buying new. We realized after the old table broke that glass tables were not for us and we didn’t want to worry about it breaking again, so we decided not to have the glass replaced.

While I love Craigslist, we weren’t finding many options that were made in this decade, were the right size, material, or the look that we were going for, so CL was a no go. That left us with buying a new table.

After searching online and in person at every store we could think of, we decided on this table from Lowe’s (and we had a coupon which was an extra incentive to shop there). We liked the look of it and that it was cast-aluminum, which is maintenance free and doesn’t rust. We also liked that the color of it coordinates nicely with our existing chairs.

I like the slat detail and that it is mostly flat for easy cleaning. A lot of the cast aluminum tables have very detailed lattice looking tops, which I always think look difficult to clean.  It’s only been out there a couple days and was completely covered in a layer of pollen and those helicopter seed things, and I can say it cleans up very easily. (I love spring, but I’ve been at war with the pollen lately. My nose has not been winning this battle.)

It goes nicely with our lounge chairs too

And, since it’s been awhile since I’ve had a positive patio post, I thought I’d give you a little reminder of where the patio started. This was what it looked like when we moved in.

All of the details on the patio overhaul are here.

RIP Patio Table

This is the unfortunate tale of our patio table. Let’s just get right to the before and after, shall we?

Before:

After:

On one lovely sunny spring day last week I was sitting outside at the table with the umbrella up enjoying the beautiful weather when I decided to quickly get up and run in the house to get something. As I was opening the patio door a big gust of wind came through.

In one of those slow motion moments, I could see in the reflection of the glass door as the wind lifted up and threw the umbrella off to the side followed by the sound of a big crash. All the while I was screaming “nooooooo!” in my head because even though I couldn’t see the table, I had a gut feeling the flying umbrella was going to be its downfall . I turned around hoping that the crash was just from the umbrella, but as you already know, it wasn’t.  I was faced with the destruction of our table. I did at least remember to snap a few pictures before cleaning up all that glass. And holy cow, all those little glass bits were sharp.

Somehow when the umbrella got lifted, it must have hit the glass wrong. I had two laptops on the table, and thankfully, both made it out okay. A bunch of other stuff I was working on is still in the rubble.

The only good thing was we didn’t spend much on the table. The table and chairs as a set were only about $450. We are still looking around at different options to replace the table and will of course post once we find something.

If you would like to see some pretty pictures today, rather than those of my broken table, check out our inspiration galleries.

Back Yard Overhaul

Over this past year our back yard went from this:

Backyard Before

To this:

This:

Backyard Before

To this:

flagstone patio

(We have also been hard at work on our front yard which I posted about here and here)

We knew when purchasing the house that we would have to invest time and money into fixing up the back yard. There was a stagnant pool of water under the low deck, which was a very happy breeding ground for mosquitoes, and it had a slight smell. The yard needed a lot of cleaning up and the deck was in poor condition.

We took the before pics during our home inspection. It was in much the same condition when we moved in.

The process kicked off in the summer of 2009 by having three trees removed from the yard. We risked foundation damage from the roots of one of the maples closest to the house, branches falling from a bradford pear that was next to the maple, and the third maple in the middle of the yard blocked too much light from entering our kitchen. We had a fourth maple removed from our front yard at the same time as these trees, also to allow more light to enter the house. We like a nice, bright house!

We met with lots of contractors to determine the best way to fix the water problem and repair or replace the deck. No two contractors had the same suggestions. Some said we could keep the deck, most said we should rip out the deck, some said we should build a retaining wall, others said no wall was needed, some said we should do a paver patio, some said we should do a concrete base patio, some said to do a french drain, others said not to.

Decisions decisions.

We talked to companies all through the summer of 2009 and still had not decided. This turned out to be a good move because we ended up talking to a contractor in the fall of 2009 that offered us a really good deal on a 400 sq. ft. flagstone patio with a concrete base plus a drainage system. The fall is their slow period, so they gave us a better deal than had we talked to them in the spring. Their solution included a drainage system which would use the patio as a way to collect the water coming down the hill and funnel it to drains which would then take the water through underground PVC pipes ending at the sidewalk in front of our house. We liked the mortared flagstone option because it is low maintenance and tends to last over time. We felt comfortable going with this company because they have a great reputation in our area, were licensed and insured, and offered a good warranty on the work. The plan was to have this company do the work in the fall of 2009, but then we got hit with unseasonably cold temperatures and early, heavy snowfall, so we ended up waiting until the spring so the ground could thaw out.

In April 2010 we were finally able to have the patio and drainage system installed. Before the work started, Marty and I were able to go out to their stone yard and pick the pallets of flagstone that we liked. We chose pallets that had a mix of blues and red-oranges. It took the contractors about a week to do everything which included tearing out our old deck, installing the drainage system, pouring a concrete base, and cutting, laying, and mortaring the flagstone.

Once the patio was in, Marty and I came up with a landscaping design to enclose the patio. We planted hydrangeas, azaleas, and Shenandoah grass. You might have noticed our azaleas have a few blooms. These are Encore azaleas and bloom twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. We were nearing the end of their blooming cycle when I took these pics.

Since we had those trees removed in 2009, we had huge bare patches of dirt in the yard, so a couple weeks ago we laid sod in those bare areas. We talked about seeding rather than sod, but since we are on a hill we were worried that the seed would just come running down the hill with the first rain. Plus, the instant gratification of sod is kind of nice! It turned out to be the perfect time to plant grass because we had a tropical depression hit us last week which resulted in lots and lots of rain. Good for the grass and good for our water bill.

Once the patio was done, we began the search for furniture. I hunted around for deals and ended up mixing and matching from Sears, Home Depot, Ballard Designs, and my favorite purchase – Restoration Hardware pillows that I got for $10 each! (posted about here)

Restoration Hardware Pillows

Our goal in buying furniture was to get something low maintenance, comfortable, nice looking, and a good value. We like to hang out on the patio for long periods of time, so comfortable cushioned dining chairs were a must. We liked the mesh lounge chairs because they are easy to keep clean and are surprisingly comfortable.

home depot martha stewart chaise lounge patio chairs

Since we purchased the dining set, I think we have had dinner on the patio every nice evening possible. I wake up before Marty most weekends, and I have been enjoying my Saturday and Sunday morning latte and Google Reader blog fix out there. We have lots of other inhabitants that hang out with us, particularly in the mornings. There are tons of chipmunks, birds, rabbits, and even a couple groundhogs that run through our yard. Supposedly groundhogs are considered a nuisance (I think they are kind of cute!), but they don’t live in our yard, and by the time we say, “ooh look the groundhog!” he is off and running through another neighbor’s yard. We get the occasional deer, though I have never spotted one, but they did munch on our hydrangeas once.

It’s our little private oasis back there, and we are so happy with how it turned out!
