I’m in this month’s This Old House!

Have you seen this month’s This Old House magazine?

this old house magazine feature

My dining room is featured in this month’s Budget Redo column!

You can see the article here:

I have Roeshel at The DIY Show Off to thank because awhile back she posted about a contest at This Old House. I entered the contest, didn’t win, BUT they contacted me to do an article on our dining room. I was so excited so I gladly accepted. It is so surreal to see our home in a magazine!

Here’s the full list of Roomspiration parties. You can still link up to the past parties, and make sure to mark your calendars for the rest.

We added a few fall touches to our dining room, and most came from…the grocery store. Yep. I like to eat my seasonal decor. Plus, we just got back from a week in CA visiting my brother and driving down the Pacific Coast Highway, and the kitchen renovation has taken up much of our free time, so the fall decor needed to be something quick and easy. I don’t usually do a lot for fall, but it’s fun to do a little something. That’s where the grocery store came in.

I got acorn squash, mini pumpkins, and one pie pumpkin.

The yellow gourd on the side table is from Crate and Barrel Outlet.

I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it when I bought it, but it was super cheap on clearance and I knew I would find a home for it. Like most of our decor, I’m sure it will move around.

So, just a few fall touches to our dining room.

Colorful Spring Tablescape

I recently found these adorable place mats from Pier 1, and the best part was they were on sale and I had a coupon, so I got six for under $10! Woo hoo. I have been wanting to add some punches of gold and green into our dining room, so I couldn’t pass these up.

I really like how they look up against our dark wood table, and the bluish flowers tie in nicely to the wall color (Benjamin Moore Iced Marble, which is a gray blue with just a hint of green)

The table runners are from Pottery Barn. There are two – a white one underneath and the textured one on top. The white peeking out adds a bit of contrast to make the tan runner stand out.

The multi-colored bowls and a bit of a whimsical element. The mustard colored appetizer plates are from, where else? Homegoods.

The lanterns are also from Homegoods (more about my Homegoods finds here)

The centerpiece bowl is from Z Gallerie. It has inlaid mosaic glass and is a bit sparkly in person. I love how it adds a bit of glam to the table. My husband is a green apple kind of guy, so I filled it with his favorite.

Also, don’t forget to check out our inspiration galleries! They include LOTS of home decor images submitted by readers like you! Browse by room type, room color and check out the gallery of painted and refinished furniture, or you can search by paint color, room type, blog name, or any combo of these. Make sure to check out the image descriptions – many include the name of the paint color and a link back to the owner’s blog where you can see more details about their rooms.

Dining Room Coming Along

We’re moving right along with our dining room reno. Now that the big things are done (painting, crown molding, and wainscoting) it’s been fun picking and choosing accessories to pull it all together. At first when we painted the walls I worried the blue-gray would feel too cold, but once we added some warm accessories and textures I think it cozied it up nicely.

So you can see where it started, this is what the dining room looked like when we bought the house.

Quite a change right?

So far we have painted the walls Benjamin Moore Iced Marble, installed crown molding, installed faux wainscoting, changed out the light fixture, got a table and chairs, and spruced it up with some accessories.

It wouldn’t be a room reno for us without something coming from Craigslist. Can you guess what it is?? I’ll give you a hint…it’s wood and functional and stained all over.

That would be our table and chairs. We actually got four of the chairs from one seller and the table from a different seller. Both were originally from World Market.

Dining Room Royal Treatment

Our dining room recently got a little royal treatment with the addition of some crown molding.

We used a miter box, and to cut crown, you flip the molding upside down, prop and secure it in the miter box at the angle which it will be placed on the wall, and cut it at the appropriate angle.

My dad came over and helped, and he gave me a few tips

  1. Use test pieces before cutting your actual pieces to make sure you are cutting the angles correctly.
  2. Start on a longer wall first. That way, if you mess up, you can use that piece on a shorter wall.
  3. Cut the first side, then measure and mark your cut for the second side. When you saw, you remove about 1/8 inch of wood, so your measurement will be off if you mark both cuts first.
  4. Cut the molding slightly longer than your measurement, hold it up, then if it needs to be shortened, shave off a little bit with your saw, hold it back up, and repeat until it fits perfectly.
  5. Walls aren’t usually straight. The molding probably wasn’t perfectly cut. This means you probably won’t get two pieces to line up perfectly in the corners and that’s okay.
  6. Caulk fixes a multitude of sins. In the corners, you want the bottom tips to be touching, but it’s okay if there is a gap otherwise

Crown corner before caulk:

In my post about our new french door, I had mentioned that I taped off the trim before caulking and painting so that I wouldn’t have to touch up the wall paint, and this method left me with a nice crisp caulk and paint line.

I used the same technique when painting the crown.

  1. Caulk around ceiling. I didn’t tape this since our ceiling is white, the caulk is white, so the caulk doesn’t show unless you look very closely. Since it is up at the ceiling, you have to be up on a ladder to see the minute color difference.
  2. Tape off the molding where it meets the wall  (I like the green Frog Tape)
  3. Caulk one wall using fast drying painters caulk.Crown after tape and caulk
  4. Immediately paint. Since the caulk is fast drying, by the time you get your paint and brush ready, it will be set enough to paint.
  5. Remove tape before paint and caulk dries to reveal a nice crisp line.crown molding after caulk and paint
  6. Repeat on remaining walls.

Before crown molding:

After crown molding (different room angle, but you get the idea)

I love it! Now I’m thinking the rest of the house deserves a little royal treatment :)

Dining Room – Part 2

I shared with you in a previous post that we painted the main part of the walls in the dining room Benjamin Moore Iced Marble.

This past weekend, Marty had to travel for work, but my dad offered to go with me and use his SUV to pick up crown molding and the molding for the wainscoting.

That’s about as far as we got with the installation of molding, so our hallway currently looks like this:

Crown molding wainscoting

The chair rail molding was installed by the previous owners and was in good shape, but I wanted to sand down some of the old brush marks. I used a sanding sponge like this:

Sanding sponge

I started out dry sanding it, and when it got all gunked up with dried paint I rinsed it out. I went ahead and tried sanding with the wet sanding sponge, and WOW, I have been missing out in my past paint sanding ventures. The wet sanding sponge worked so much better than dry sandpaper. Seriously folks, try it. It was quite satisfying to see such smooth results with so little effort. You do have to rinse out the sponge more frequently, but that is just because it is so darn efficient at sanding paint this way.

I figured it would be easier to paint the chair rail and bottom portion of the wall before installing the faux wainscoting boxes, so l I applied Sherwin Williams Proclassic Semigloss paint in Alabaster, the same trim paint we used here and here and all throughout the house. I painted the chair rail first then went back to do the wall and baseboards. To get the smoothest finish possible on the wall, I used a small roller to apply the paint then went back over it immediately with a paintbrush using long even vertical strokes.

Now I know what Daniel-san felt like painting the fence, sans Mr. Miyagi of course. “Up…down…up….down…”

Next up – installing the crown molding and wainscoting boxes! And I get to use this:

antique miter saw

It’s a vintage miter saw that used to be my grandfather’s. Cool huh?
